Need More Time to Evaluate Windows 10?

When you upgrade your Windows 7 machine (or Windows 8 or 8.1) to Windows 10, by default, you have 10 days to decide if you want to keep Windows 10 or return to Windows 7. This is done by launching the Settings app, choosing "Update & Security", then "Recovery" (on the left side):

The idea is that in 10 days you can discover all of the possible driver issues, program incompatibilities, or anything else that makes you think this is not a good move for now. But what if you need more than 10 days? With 6 months until
Windows 7 reaches end of life, it might be a good idea to spend some more time with Windows 10 before making up your mind. Maybe 30 days. What the heck: 60 days. Yes, yes you can.

Here's how. Open up an elevated command prompt (right click Command Prompt under Windows System from the Start Menu, choose More, then Run As Administrator):

In that elevated command prompt, type in the following command to check the current setting:

dism /Online /Get-OSUninstallWindow

The answer will probably say: Uninstall Window : 10
This means you have 10 days from the day you upgraded to Windows 10.

Then type in the following command. As an example, this will set the time to 30 days from the day you upgraded:

dism /Online /Set-OSUninstallWindow /Value:30

You can change that value to anything up to 60 days. If you try anything bigger than 60, it will seem to work, but will actually set it to 10 days instead of the number you put in the command.

Once you've set this, make sure it worked with that first command again:

dism /Online /Get-OSUninstallWindow

You should then see the value you gave it in the "Set-OSUninstallWindow" command.
